If you know me at all, you know that music is my favorite thing in the world. I have headphones on almost 24/7, and I'll never pass up a concert. Unfortunately, I've been slacking in the live music area, and haven't been to a show since Springsteen in February. So, it was by pure luck that I won a contest at work and got hooked up with tickets to see an act I knew very little about - Trans-Siberian Orchestra!
While you read on, click play here and enjoy some tunes!
Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) is a progressive rock band that's been around for 20 years now. They do a lot of Christmas music. Yes, Christmas music. But, if you've ever heard them before, you know it's not the traditional Bing Crosby stuff. There is an orchestra on stage, but take the visions of Carnegie Hall out of your head. This is rock Christmas music, combined with lasers, video screens, and pyro.
My job gave me two tickets to sit in our box suite (with free drinks and snacks), so I took my friend David with me. We sat in traffic and got there late (a musical sin of the 1st degree), but we still made it in time to enjoy almost the entire show. One thing I noticed is that I was in jeans and was...severely underdressed.
The first part of the TSO show goes through a full Christmas story, with a narrator telling the tale. After a brief stop to introduce us to the entire band, TSO goes into many more songs. I typically hate going to concerts where I don't know the band, since I don't want to stand there awkwardly while everyone else is singing along. The cool thing is that even if you aren't familiar with their stuff, you can still identify most of what they're playing and really enjoy yourself.
If you have the chance to see TSO, you should 100% take advantage of it and GO. This was easily one of the top live performances I've ever seen, and I've gone to my fair share of arena concerts. The one strange thing that David pointed out was that this was the first concert I've been to where....everyone was sitting down. Next year I'm hoping to catch them again when they come to NYC!
My photos can't do the light show justice, but here are some more shots from the performance:
