Have you ever looked at a calendar and been shocked that so much time has passed? I've been back in New York for two months already, and I don't even know how this much time has gone by. This week flew by, which is great since my goal is to spend as little time sitting around as possible. Unfortunately, it's supposed to rain for the next few days, so I won't be able to enjoy the warmer (50s...) temperatures. In the meantime, here's a recap of my really random week.
Let's rewind back to last week! One of my bucket list items was to go to the St. Patrick's Day Parade. I took the day off from work and went into the city to check it out. You can read more about that here!
Since I had the day off, and I was already in midtown, I walked over to Macy's in Herald Square. My roommate was having a birthday brunch party the next day, and I wanted to pick up a griddle for proper pancake making.
This store is tremendous. I found a griddle (thank goodness for sales) and discovered a hidden gem - Au Bon Pain! I used to always go to the one in Penn Station when I first worked in the city. Naturally, I had to stop for some coffee and mac and cheese.
I had the rest of the day off, so I made my way back to Queens and ran a few errands before it was time to get ready for a St. Patrick's Day party!
Maybe it's because I'm super Italian, but St. Patrick's Day is always a bad holiday for me. There was the time I blew out my knee and then got beer spilled on me, or the time I got a flat tire. But this year, everything was fun. I made a quick batch of brownies to bring to the party.
Other than the $35 Lyft ride home ("peak time" = lesson learned to just take the subway), the night was great. I was glad we didn't go too crazy, since I wanted to be up to help prepare for the birthday brunch the next day.
Saturday morning we got up early to decorate the house and get started on Kyla's birthday brunch! Her friends brought so many sweets...cake, apple turnovers, donuts, rainbow cookies, bagels - it was basically a big carb explosion, and it was awesome.
I used my new griddle to make a big batch of chocolate chip pancakes!
We also set up a DIY mimosa bar, which was awesome and let everyone make exactly what they wanted. To make your own, simply set out different juices (we had pineapple, orange, cranberry, grapefruit, and pink lemonade) with your choice of champagne!
I escaped the party long enough to hit the gym. Saturday night I went into the city for my friend Melissa's birthday at Slainte, a bar in my favorite part of the city. I'm really excited for it to be warm so I can walk around and explore downtown.
I spend Sunday meal prepping for a good part of the day while I watched the Great British Bakeoff on Netflix. I needed some inspiration.
I finally got my favorite protein powder again, so I was able to make my peanut butter oatmeal protein muffins. These were a great snack for meal prep this week!
The weather around here has been fluctuating...just a bit. Last week we had that huge snowstorm, and Tuesday it was 58 degrees. Now that it's officially spring, I'm hoping the warmer temperatures are here to stay. It should be in the 50s/60s the next week or so, but it's also going to rain. I celebrated the warmer weather with a run on Tuesday night. I've been having hip/foot issues, and I'm not really sure what's causing them. Since I always seem to be injured, it seems like a good time to reevaluate my shoes and strength training. I don't want to spend all of spring and summer hurting, but I have a really high tolerance for injuries.
Wednesday was Kyla's actual birthday, so we took her out to celebrate! We were going to go to 5 Burro Cafe, a Mexican restaurant/bar near us. After waiting an hour and being harassed by a drunk guy, we gave up and went to Bareburger instead. It turned out they were having their anniversary celebration, so drinks and desserts were $5!
The birthday girl!
I pretty much forced everyone to order and split dessert with me. We got the S'mmmmmores Sundae - chocolate and vanilla ice cream, graham cracker, chocolate sauce, and torched marshmallow. It was insanely good, and insanely sweet. I'm really tempted to recreate it, because graham crackers are basically my favorite thing.
