Do you ever feel guilty for sitting around at home on a Friday night? I absolutely do. My roommates like to tell me that you need quiet nights in, but whenever I spend my day/weekend sitting around doing nothing, I feel like I'm wasting my life away. Even though it's been cold out the past few days, I hate loafing around - I did enough of that while I lived in Florida.
Since I knew my weekend would be quiet (spoiler alert: lots of sleeping, cooking, and going to the gym), I figured Friday could be my night out to do things. In keeping with my goal to say "yes" to everything possible, I went (walked) downtown after work to have some drinks with my friend Kris and some of his coworkers at Brass Monkey. I had tickets for dueling pianos at 9:00, so after two rounds of Jack and Coke I went back to midtown to grab dinner.
Go Go Curry makes the best Japanese curry - fortunately for me they're also about 3 blocks from where I work.
A few weeks ago I got an invite on Meetup to go to dueling pianos. I had never even heard of dueling pianos before, so I figured this would be a good first Meetup event. The show was by Shake Rattle & Roll, and it was held at The Pennsy, which is apparently a new bar area they built right near Penn Station. It looks like this area would be great when it's nice out, AKA not 20 degrees like Friday night.
A side note: when you move away for five years, everything is new to you!
If you've never been to dueling pianos, it basically works like this: two people play piano, and you request the songs. There's a ton of crowd participation, so they encourage drinking, singing along, clapping your hands, dancing, etc. etc. To request a song, you simply throw a few dollars in with your request. If there's a terrible song being played, you have to outbid that request to make them stop playing.
These guys were awesome! I posted a video over on my Five Borough Bucket List Facebook page so you can see them in action. We had a bachelorette party sitting right near us, so it was definitely a night of fun.
I highly recommend checking out Shake Rattle & Roll, or any other dueling pianos event you can find!
